Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust was established in 1984, founding the Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), the first self-financing engineering college in Tamil Nadu. In 2002, it was granted Deemed to be University status, leading to the establishment of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER).
